Originally formulated for direct response marketing, the 40-40-20 rule remains the most accurate predictor of campaign success in the digital age.
The Success Factors:
- 40% Audience (The Who): Reaching the right people is the most important factor. If you sell steak to vegans, it doesn't matter how good the creative is.
- 40% Offer (The What): What are you giving them? Is the price right? Is the incentive compelling?
- 20% Creative (The How): This is the copy, the design, and the formatting. While it's the most visible part, it's actually the least important for the final conversion.
