What Falls Outside of Copyright?
While copyright law is broad, it doesn't cover everything. Understanding these limits is crucial for creators who want to build upon existing knowledge.
1. Ideas, Facts, and Concepts
Copyright protects the *expression* of an idea, not the idea itself. For example, you can't copyright the concept of "time travel," but you can copyright a specific story about a character traveling through time.
2. Short Phrases, Titles, and Slogans
Most titles of books or movies, product names, and catchy slogans are too short to qualify for copyright protection. However, they may be protectable under **Trademark Law**.
Other Exclusions:
- Public Domain Works: Works where the copyright has expired.
- U.S. Government Works: Documents produced by the U.S. government are generally not eligible for copyright.
- Scènes à Faire: Common literary or dramatic elements that are standard in a particular genre.
